David Carson 3.1 Task 4
David Carson
The Magazine Factory, London .
2013
David Carson uses Photography and modern day technology like
computers to generate his images. David’s style is grunge typography. With
David’s work he purposely blurs the images and makes them out of focus to give
the images a sense of mystery making the image more interesting.
With David Carson’s work he intentionally makes his designs
emotional trying to convey feelings and attitude through the contents. David
says that his designs should always be more then mere design.
In David’s designs his main images are normally placed in
the centre of the image which dominates a lot of the space. When David uses
images ( Photography ) the image is easy to see and isn't unrecognisable but in
some of his images where text is dominate the text can be hard to read and
sometimes unreadable. David uses a lot of different colours depending on what
emotional response he is trying to make you feel. The text is large and easy to
read but doesn't overwhelm the image which makes the image look tidy. The text
is a lot brighter then the image behind it which makes it easy to see and read.
The main point is the text and image working together. Because of the way the
text is used and how it follows the shape of the person and is sometimes behind
the person giving the image depth the text and image work together and aren't clashing with one another.
In his designs I like how he integrates images and text
together making the images more interesting. I like how he is able to make the
text look like part of the images and not look like it’s just been thrown on
top of an image.
I think how David Carson is trying to use his work to
influence an emotional response in the viewer makes his work more interesting
and allows him to tell you more then he could just with images.
I don’t think any other Media's would have worked well
because the way he makes his designs with modern day technology gives his work
a different effect then if he had used other Media's on top of the current ones.
David Carson 3.1 Task 4
The words are
blurred and slightly distorted, clashing with the man's calm expression in
the background. The typography curls around him, as if it's something
personal to that person. He has made the text look part of the image and not
just overlaid text. This draws the text and image together making them easier
to relate to one another.
|
This piece is
another combination of photography, digital work and typography.
|
Instead of sepia,
the whole tone of the work is defined by the dark shadows and reds, which
give it a morbid feel. Morbid is the felling that David is trying to make you
feel when you look at this image.
|
The media used gives
the image a different effect that wouldn’t be achievable if using a different
media. Having photos that are edited allows David to get his desired look and
effect. The way David uses computers allows him to put his spin on his
designs making them more unique and interesting.
|
|
The words “DO NOT BE SATISFIED” and the colour of the
image work well together to give a feeling of darkness and sadness. The
expression on the mans face looks sad which relates to the projected emotion.

3.1 Task 3 Comparison.
Frank
Miller
|
Similarities
|
Neville
Brody
|
Colour:
Most of the colour Frank uses is Black,
White and Red. This gives the images a different style and makes them
interesting. The image seems less confusing because of the small colour
range.
Main images:
His main images cover a large amount of
the space. His main images are normally black and white and are drawn in a
comic style. The main image is normally with speech bubbles or effects to
show what’s happening in the scene.
Spacing:
The spacing in his images makes the main
image easy to see and the text easy to read. The space around the image isn’t
crowded which makes the main image stand out more.
Influences:
Frank was influenced by noir writers
Mickey Spillane, Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. The pacing was very
influenced by the Lone Wolf & Cub manga by Goseki Kojima & Kazuo
Koike.
|
Both of these artist have Typography in
there work but Frank Millers art is made to go with text but Neville Brody
makes his images from text.
|
Colour:
The colours used by this artist are
bright, bold and easy to see. This also makes the image standout more drawing
your eyes to the image. A lot of the colours are used to stop text from
merging into the image there with.
Main images:
Neville’s images are mainly made from
typography and some images. A lot of images in this style are advertising a
brand using text. The main image covers most of the space and sometimes the
image and text will overlap.
Spacing:
Sometimes the space is even and spread
out and sometimes the image is over lapping with text. This spacing makes the
image felling change and makes it more interesting.
Influences:
Neville was influenced by new technology
like computers with new software allowing a different style of art to be
made.
|
Layout:
This artists work mostly composes of a
large image and sometimes text beside the image. There is never text by its
self and when there is it never dominates the image.
Composition:
The composition of his images are well
spaced with easy to see images and text. The images and text is easy to see
because of the way he uses the colors and how he places them.
Typography:
Frank uses typography is his work to tell
a story like in comic books. He also uses typography in his images for title
and names.
Technique:
Franks technique is to hand draw his art
work using ink, pens and brushes. He draws first in pencil to get is ruff
image then clean its up when applying ink over the image.
|
|
Layout:
This artist’s work normally has text
covering most of the image. There is sometimes an image with the text but the
text is normally the main point of the image. Sometimes the layout makes it
so text is over lapping with other text or over lapping an image.
Composition:
The composition this artist uses has a
lot of bright and bold text. The spacing changes because in some images
there’s over lapping and in others there isn’t. The background is an empty
flat colour that makes the image less confusing and makes the main image
easier to see.
Typography:
Most of the images have text in them and
some of them have the main image made from text. The text is normally
advertising a brand. The text has bright and bold colours on it which makes
it standout and easy to read. The text some times over laps with other text
making the image more confusing but it is still readable.
Technique:
Neville started using this style when
Apple computers came out because of there image creating/editing software
allowing him to do new and different things.

Typography. David Carson. Task 2
Typography David Carson
The colours used by this artist using the typography style are very
bold and saturated. The colour is
exaggerated to make life seem more intense and exciting.
The main images in this style are predominantly made from text/type or
are covered in it. The text can sometimes be hard to read but is used to make a
point.
The space in this style normally has a busy spot and an empty spot that
allows the eye to rest. There normally isn’t much depth in the images but
doesn’t look to flat.
The style was properly influenced by artists wanting to use
text/type for more then just writing sentences and started to use text to make
images.
The layouts in this style revolve around text/type. Typography
dominates most of the image and the main image made from text is normally
large.
The composition of the images in this style is normally having bright,
bold colours in the background. Text dominates most of the image and sometimes
the main image is made from text to. The text can sometimes be hard to read or
even unreadable.
The text/type in this style isn’t always readable. The text is
sometimes used to create the images and normally stands out from the
background.
A technique used in this style is photography and computer generated
images.
Illustration. Peter Max. task 2

This style uses a lot of colours that are bright, bold, vibrant
and saturated. There is a small range of colours
used but they are used in a way that the image is still easy to see and
doesn’t merge together.
Main images in
this style take up a lot of the space in the image. The main image uses the
same colours as the background which stops it from standing out as much as it
could.
The space in this style is used well. There is no over lapping of
images which make the images less confusing and busy looking. The background of
the space is the same colour as the
rest of the image which brings the image together.
This style is influenced by having images with a
story which helps the story to be told. This is mainly used in children’s books
and comics but is in some novels.
The layout in this style normally has the main image in the middle of
the image with an empty background. There is sometimes a main image along with
other smaller images in the background.
This styles composition has bright, bold, vibrant
and saturated colours that make the image stand out which draws your eye in.
The main image is placed in the middle of the image that makes it easier to
see. There is sometimes text with the main image but it is never over whelming.
There is sometimes more images then the main image but the background images
don’t make the image confusing.
This style doesn’t use much text/type. When it is used it’s with
the main image which it complements. The text is normally a different colour
then the background with stops it from merging with the background and makes it
standout more.
The technique this artist uses in this style uses a newer printing technique that allows for four-colour
reproduction on product merchandise.
Handmade. Joseph cornell. Task 2
Handmade Joseph Cornell
The colours used in this style are lots earth tones like brown for wood
and green for grass/trees. There is a
lot of different colours used in
this style but there isn’t much of any one colour.
There is a mixture of vibrant and dull colours with doesn’t make the art
look to intense or boring.
The main images in this style are normally something to do with nature
like birds and humans. This suits the style of the background making it look
like it fits in and doesn’t stand out to much. In a lot of the images the
different parts are divided by a grid.
The spacing in this style is
easy to see because it is divided by a grid making the image less confusing
even when there in multiple images in one peace of work.
This style was properly influenced by the art that can be made
by hand and the different things that can be made.
In this style the layout makes the images easy to see
because the use of a grid. In the different parts of the grid there is separate
images/items that all fit into the boxes.
This styles composition is
that most of the pieces of art are divided by a grid making the image less
confusing. A lot of earth tones are used like wood to create the
images/artwork. All the different grids fit together and everything relates to
the other.
This style uses little text/type. When there is text it’s
normally on the product used to create the artwork. The text isn’t always
readable but doesn’t make the image confusing.
There are many different techniques used to make this style
because the art isn’t always made from the same product and different tools and
skills are needed for them.
