David Carson 3.1 Task 4

David Carson

The Magazine Factory, London. 2013

David Carson uses Photography and modern day technology like computers to generate his images. David’s style is grunge typography. With David’s work he purposely blurs the images and makes them out of focus to give the images a sense of mystery making the image more interesting.

With David Carson’s work he intentionally makes his designs emotional trying to convey feelings and attitude through the contents. David says that his designs should always be more then mere design.

In David’s designs his main images are normally placed in the centre of the image which dominates a lot of the space. When David uses images ( Photography ) the image is easy to see and isn't unrecognisable but in some of his images where text is dominate the text can be hard to read and sometimes unreadable. David uses a lot of different colours depending on what emotional response he is trying to make you feel. The text is large and easy to read but doesn't overwhelm the image which makes the image look tidy. The text is a lot brighter then the image behind it which makes it easy to see and read. The main point is the text and image working together. Because of the way the text is used and how it follows the shape of the person and is sometimes behind the person giving the image depth the text and image work together and aren't clashing with one another.
In his designs I like how he integrates images and text together making the images more interesting. I like how he is able to make the text look like part of the images and not look like it’s just been thrown on top of an image.
I think how David Carson is trying to use his work to influence an emotional response in the viewer makes his work more interesting and allows him to tell you more then he could just with images.
I don’t think any other Media's would have worked well because the way he makes his designs with modern day technology gives his work a different effect then if he had used other Media's on top of the current ones.

David Carson 3.1 Task 4

The words are blurred and slightly distorted, clashing with the man's calm expression in the background. The typography curls around him, as if it's something personal to that person. He has made the text look part of the image and not just overlaid text. This draws the text and image together making them easier to relate to one another.

This piece is another combination of photography, digital work and typography.

Instead of sepia, the whole tone of the work is defined by the dark shadows and reds, which give it a morbid feel. Morbid is the felling that David is trying to make you feel when you look at this image.
The media used gives the image a different effect that wouldn’t be achievable if using a different media. Having photos that are edited allows David to get his desired look and effect. The way David uses computers allows him to put his spin on his designs making them more unique and interesting.

The words “DO NOT BE SATISFIED” and the colour of the image work well together to give a feeling of darkness and sadness. The expression on the mans face looks sad which relates to the projected emotion.

The colours used by this artist using the typography style are very bold and saturated. The colour is exaggerated to make life seem more intense and exciting.

The main images in this style are predominantly made from text/type or are covered in it. The text can sometimes be hard to read but is used to make a point.

The space in this style normally has a busy spot and an empty spot that allows the eye to rest. There normally isn’t much depth in the images but doesn’t look to flat.

The style was properly influenced by artists wanting to use text/type for more then just writing sentences and started to use text to make images.

The layouts in this style revolve around text/type. Typography dominates most of the image and the main image made from text is normally large.

The composition of the images in this style is normally having bright, bold colours in the background. Text dominates most of the image and sometimes the main image is made from text to. The text can sometimes be hard to read or even unreadable.

The text/type in this style isn’t always readable. The text is sometimes used to create the images and normally stands out from the background.

A technique used in this style is photography and computer generated images.

Illustration. Peter Max. task 2

Illustration                 Peter Max

This style uses a lot of colours that are bright, bold, vibrant and saturated. There is a small range of colours used but they are used in a way that the image is still easy to see and doesn’t merge together.

Main images in this style take up a lot of the space in the image. The main image uses the same colours as the background which stops it from standing out as much as it could.

The space in this style is used well. There is no over lapping of images which make the images less confusing and busy looking. The background of the space is the same colour as the rest of the image which brings the image together.
